How Direct Air Capture Works

DAC plants draw ambient air over chemical adsorbents that bind CO₂ molecules. The CO₂ is then released, concentrated, and either permanently stored underground or converted into synthetic fuels, materials, or other products. The process requires significant energy — which is why co-location with renewable energy sources is critical.

The Leading Companies

Climeworks (Switzerland), Carbon Engineering (acquired by Oxy), and Heirloom Carbon are operating commercial DAC plants in 2026. Climeworks' Mammoth plant in Iceland can remove 36,000 tons of CO₂ per year. While still small relative to global emissions, these plants are proving the technology works at commercial scale.

The Path to Economic Viability

DAC currently costs $300–$600 per ton of CO₂ removed. Economic studies suggest costs need to fall to $100–$150/ton for DAC to make economic sense without heavy subsidies. Learning curves from deployed capacity are driving costs down — and the US government's $3.5 billion investment in DAC hubs is accelerating the trajectory.
